PHS Football Field Named After Coach

Durst Field is now Steve Ellison field

Petaluma High School’s Durst Field has been officially renamed Ellison Field, in honor of Steve Ellison, a former football coach and teacher.

The name change was announced at Friday night's game at the school after a group of parents approached the district with the request.

Ellison spent 33 years coaching the school football team and retired in 2009 after a hallmark season in which his team won all but one game. The team went on to win the Sonoma County League championship and reached the North Coast Section semifinals.

“His contribution to the school has been immense,” said Petaluma High School Principal David Stirrat.

The field was previously named after David Durst, a superintendent of Petaluma schools in the '30s and '40s.
