Celebrate Wellness on Nov. 13, Then Light Up the Big Blue Spire

Diabetes Awareness Day Nov. 13 will offer glucose screening, flu shots, yoga and other fun activities

Visual wonder awaits when the Frank Lloyd Wright big blue spire lights up at Marin Civic Center 7-10 pm on Sunday, Nov. 13th. Big blue lighting is the culmination of a day full of activities to celebrate wellness in the Bay Area.

The color blue and the theme Walk and Play in Wellness will welcome visitors of all ages to the first Bay Area-wide celebration of World Diabetes Awareness Day.

The 2011 daytime event, held from 12-5pm, occurs at the College of Marin campus in Kentfield. The last two years, the popular event was held at Ellis Creek in Petaluma, supported each year by a Proclamation from the Petaluma City Council.  The event and news of it began to grow countywide and now regionally - this year features Bay Area-wide participation.

The way the daytime event at College of Marin is organized is particularly appealing. Three elements make for an experience in wholeness:

(1)  Practical free screenings are offered by qualified medical professionals - glucose testing, foot screening, flu shots and education about risks for Diabetes types 1 and 2.

(2) On-site gentle suggestions and empowerment for life choices and well being are available to anyone who's interested.

(3) Fun activities, including Zumba, Yoga and an Awareness Walk/Run, are planned.  Add to this a few surprises and we see a formula for a well planned, fun and beneficial event for health and wellness.

Our local Petaluma awareness day began with the international movement - World Diabetes Day. The mission of the world awareness day (from www.walkandplayforwellness.org):

"To assist children and families in reaching health and wellness goals to prevent and control diabetes, by providing them with education, resources, activities and mentors from the community."

The United for Diabetes campaign video offers a moving world perspective.  Posters for the Nov. 13th event day (English and Spanish) accompany this blog.

Organizers of the event are to be commended for caring, for providing a link to the global movement and making practical and educational action available locally.  Health and wellness choices for ourselves may also help us find new ways to heal our planet.
