Ptown Proud there comes a point where you have to balance idealism with reality. Who's more inRead More danger of being harrassed, leered at, and assaulted? The girls. What's the easiest way to to avoid the unwanted attention? Put a little more thought into your wardrobe. It may be wrong, not fair, a blow to female equality, but it's the truth.

Not a false uproar. The school administrator told the girls (verbatim) that they shouldn't dressRead More like "hoochie mamas" at school. That statement (to 12-14 yr old girls) causes a problem for me. The subject matter was exaggerated (after the fact). The vmail (automated) and emails I received weren't specific when referencing "clarifying statements made by administration at the assembly". Someone at KJHS should have filtered what was going to be coming out of the administrator's mouth. The administrator and the school ended up looking like jackasses.

Read the rest of the posts. If girls parts are distracting in skinny jeans, then why wouldn't theRead More boys be? They wear them, but the weren't pulled out of class and forced to sit through an assembly where they were blamed for the inattentiveness of a collective group. You can't single out a group based on sex, there are laws that protect against it and teaching young girls that they are responsible for the decisions and behavior of the boys is disturbing to say the least!

I now have no reason to ever visit my old High School.

T.Sprocket should worry about his/her own comments... How ignorant can one be? Apparently-VERY! If IRead More wanted my kid in a uniform, they'd be attending private school. And YES TS, I did wear a uniform for 12 years. Boys (and girls) will be distracted by what they are distracted with... Human nature. TS - criticizing PT's parenting skills? SO GLAD you aren't my parent. You represent yourself to be a complete and utter ignoramus. The administration screwed up. Calling the girls, "Hoochie Mamas". If that was said at a "uniform wearing" school, that administrator would now be looking for a new job-that doesn't involve working with kids.

If you have questions, there'll be a meeting for parents at Corona tomorrow from 6-7 (April 5) andRead More at Meadow on April 11 from 6-7. I got a copy of the Charter itself from Chris at the Meadow office if you want to read the document before the meeting. Also, for the record, the superintendent promised his teachers a CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATE of $365,000. --Kari

It's crazy that top flight schools such as Meadow have to battle such bureaucracy in order to beRead More able to simply focus on their core responsibilities of educating children. The dedication and commitment of any teacher working in a school, where they have received the type of State and Federal recognition for their efforts, should be rewarded; not forced to become a Charter, lose potential retirement benefits, and be forced to beg for every Nickle and Dime. The Waugh School District, as well as any other public school considering a conversion into a Charter, should serve as a wake-up call to the political powers that be, that the financial playing field is not equal. The public school's survival is based on becoming a Charter School, because funding is treated so differently between the two. It's our government acting stupidly again, forcing these high achieving schools into a corner. Bravo to Waugh and any school who truely places kids first. And to our elected officials.....well, I can't say it in public.

Thanks, Chad. I'll change this right away. And welcome to Petaluma!

Hi, guys! Someone just told me about this article, so I was taking a quick look. Ive actually beenRead More here in Brisbane School District for four years, not two. For the past two years (because of the budget crunch) I have been principal of both Brisbane Elementary School, and Panorama Elementary School. Last week, I was SO honored to finally meet some of wonderful staff and parents at MCCV, and I am so excited to be a part of such an amazing educational family! My wife, Carolyn, and I look forward to getting to know the Petaluma community. Thanks for your kind words! Chad

With the exception of kindergarten (Hi Mrs. R.C.!) I spent all of my grammar and high school yearsRead More at St. Vincent's. Looking back; with four years of college and three years of law school under my belt, I can say without hesitation that the education I received at St. Vincent's laid the foundation for success in academics and in my personal life. My teachers at St. Vincent Elementary provided rigorous instruction in the basics of grammar, mathematics, spelling, science, history, and theology. This solid educational bedrock gave me self-discipline and intellectual curiosity. Susan Roffman, Donna Piezzi, Roseanne Ercolini, Joanne Schloetter, Kirsten List, Chris Giaccometti, Gladys Gramling, Diane Benjamin, Helen Dias, and Mrs. Dalton were all very dedicated teachers. Some of them probably deserve a medal for enduring me--I was a precocious child. St. Vincent High School is home to a staff of highly dedicated, passionate instructors who have a vested interested in seeing their students excel. Darvin DeShazer's insistence on timeliness taught me that punctuality is a virtue. Janet Donovan, Colleen West, Mary Fitzgerald, and Anne Marie Insull introduced me to great books and taught me how to write. Ed. Marcoux patiently explained algebra to me, and Mike O'Toole met with me before school to tutor me for the AP History exam. The rigors of Mr. Kavanaugh's Western Civ class steeled me for law school, as did Mr. Gonzales's Speech and Debate class.

There isn't enough space to say all that I want about the teachers my son has had at Petaluma HighRead More School (PHS). I loved the Twin Hills district in Sebastopol & was concerned when my son transferred to PHS freshman year. The PHS teachers that stand out in my mind are: Kylee Cecchini/Am. Literature, Jennie Lounibus/World History, Victor Brazil/Physical Science, Fred Brunton/Auto, Jeff Dunn/Welding, Doug Cox/Math, Jill Fahy/Photography, and Brian Granados/US History. These teachers have taught my son discipline, perseverance, compassion, art and life skills he will carry throughout his life. Thank you to all teachers for all you give to our kids. PHS teachers rock!!

The reality is that teachers are professionals who know how to teach a subject objectively andRead More impartially. A math teacher is not likely to be talking about moral issues. If the Bishop had confined his contract provisions to religion teachers and what they taught at school, maybe I could understand it. It seems to be okay for gay priests to preach from the pulpit, but not okay for a lay teacher to even think about alternative sexuality. The Bishop is obsessed with the subject probably because the clergy has been so rocked by sexual scandals. But the irony is that they always pick on the nuns or the laity and never themselves. In order to volunteer at a Catholic school you have to be fingerprinted and attend sexual abuse instruction, but we haven't been the problem, just the victims. It is bizzare. But this bishop is determined to make a name for himself as some kind of crusader no matter how many people he drives away. I think he is bucking for some kind of promotion which is probably the only way we will ever get rid of him. Never should this man have been made an administrator.

Lots of commentary on this from members of Bishop Vasa's former Diocese in Oregon who feel theRead More Addendum to teacher's contracts is just one of several things he may have in store: http://ncronline.org/news/california-bishop-adds-belief-requirements-teacher-contracts#comment-828318413

Yes Abner, and I and many others can choose to avoid your schools and churches. Given that a largeRead More majority of residents of Sonoma County, including Catholics, support gay rights and use contraceptives, I'd say it's very dangerous to aggressively exclude people for having the "wrong" views. But that is The Church's choice.

Pedestrians need to remember that these crosswalks are not magical force fields that stop cars fromRead More hitting you. You still must look both ways before crossing the street. Do not leave the sidewalk if a vehicle is approaching close enough to constitute an immediate hazard. Keep your eyes on any approaching vehicles, not down at the ground or your cell phone. Walk quickly and act like you don't want to get hit by a car. Those cars are driven by humans and we are not very good drivers. In a game of Car vs Pedestrian, the Car always wins, regardless of who has the right of way. If your driving, please observe the speed limit, maintain a high visual horizon, and scan the road for pedestrians. These crosswalks are an unnecessary and avoidable expense.

Blah blah blah! Dress up racism in any pretty package you want. It's still and always wrong. It'sRead More taught at home. We all know what acceptable behavior is is what it is not.

" I don't find chanting "USA USA" IN THE USA racist" & "I think theRead More chant is perfectly acceptable". (Those were your quotes...right SP? Both of which ARE Racist when used in the manner the PHS kids used it. Give me a break, or state your point better. Political Correctness has absolutely ZERO to do with any of this story. Sheesh.
SP February 17, 2013 at 04:44 am
Angelo, Your emotion blocks your logic. I said repeatedly that racism is intolerable and that allRead More cultures and ethnicities make up the USA. I am only third generation American so spare me your lecture. By the way, not every kid chanting was white. It is hard to be blind to color lines when you keep accentuating them.

What a wonderful gift to so many students. Is the same being done for students at College of Marin?Read More If IVC were to continue to bring classes to Novato we could offer programs that would allow local students to avoid commuting while completing their first two years of college. The certificate program in Multimedia Studies at IVC has great teachers. We need more vocational programs that allow High School students to prepare for careers with two year degrees. So much could be done with donations like those being provided to SRJC.
