Contract Deal Still Eludes Petaluma School District, Teachers Union
Request for state mediator comes after both sides failed to resolve conflicts at a Friday meeting.
Less than six weeks before students fill Petaluma classrooms, the school district and teachers union and have reached an impasse on contract talks for the 2013-2014 school year.
Both sides have requested a state mediator to help resolve their differences, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports.
A tentative deal between Petaluma City Schools District and the Petaluma Federation of Teachers reached in May was rejected by the union's membership, returning both sides to the bargaining table.

Sticking points include a dispute over salary increases, adding 88 minutes to the kindergarten day four times a week, the report says. Also at issue is a controversial "parent portal" allowing parents to access student grades online.
